Coimbatore: A mother elephant on Tuesday mourned the death of it's calf and refused to leave the carcass in Gudalur, Nilgiris district. All efforts of the foresters to chase the elephant went in vain.
Coimbatore: A mother elephant on Tuesday mourned the death of it's calf and refused to leave the carcass in Gudalur, Nilgiris district. All efforts of the foresters to chase the elephant went in vain.
Upon information by the estate workers of Kochukunnu Estate in the Gudalur forest area of Nilgiris of a dead elephant calf on Monday, the foresters arrived to the spot to retrieve the carcass and conduct post mortem.
On Monday, the foresters made several attempts to retrieve the carcass of the calf, however the presence of a large herd led by the mother elephant hindered the process. As the herd was seen very aggressive, the foresters decided to conduct the post mortem, on Tuesday.
However, all efforts to retrieve the carcass failed on Tuesday also, as the mother elephant stood covering the dead calf and mourned. While it was decided to lit crackers to chase the elephant from the spot, the foresters were skeptical if it would provoke the mother elephant.
Keeping in mind the safety of the tea estate workers, the forest officials dropped the idea of retrieving the carcass till the mother elephant leaves the site. They also advised the estate workers to refrain from entering the estate, until the elephant leaves the area.
"The post mortem will be conducted after the mother elephant leaves the place", said a forest department official.
In a similar incident, a few months ago, in Cherampadi, the mother elephant turned violent and rampaged shops and a temple after foresters forcibly tried to chase it away from it's dead calf.
