Coimbatore: Alleging the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) for inordinate delay in providing free power connections to agricultural farmers under the Tatkal and free power scheme, the District farmers petitioned to the Collector here on Monday.

As all their efforts to garner the attention of the authorities have failed, the enraged farmers brought electricity boxes to the Collectorate to remind their plight.

The farmers are already hit by increase in labour cost, fertilisers cost, unforeseen climatic conditions, infestations, decrease in ground water sources, along with this the delay by TANGEDCO in providing free electricity connection is taking a toll on us, the farmers noted in their petition.

They pointed that many of the farmers have borewell facility but the delay in providing electricity connection has made the resource useless. They also cited incidents were farmers are waiting for almost two decades for the connection.

"While TANGEDCO offers attractive schemes to benefit the farmers, such inordinate delays in providing connection will affect the farmers gravely", opined Farmer Palanisamy.

They have jointly requested the State government to pay heed to their request and urged the State Ministry for Electricity to pass an order to provide free electricity connection to all farmers, on priority.
