The wild animals in the forest have found refuge in the tea estates and eucalyptus forests with the rapid depletion of their habitat. This has also led them to stray into the human habitat in search of food and water.
Residents in the area reported that a black panther was found dead in a tea estate near Kadakkodu village near Kotagiri in Nilgiris district. A team led by Forest Officer Saravana Kumar visited and examined the area.
Also, the veterinarian was called and he examined the body parts of the dead carcass. It was revealed that the deceased was a 3-year-old female black panther.
Forest Department officials said, "We have collected samples of carcass found in a dead area in a forest area under the guidance of veterinarian Rajan. We suspect they may have died of an infection. We are conducting a series of investigations. Samples of the body will be sent to the laboratory. The full details will be known only after the study results. ”
Regarding this, wildlife enthusiasts say, “There are a handful of black panthers. Last year one was poisoned in Manjakombai region. Recently, mysterious deaths of wild animals including bear and leopard in the surrounding areas of Coonoor and Kotagiri have been found hence proper investigation should be made to identify the cause of death and appropriate action must be taken."
