Coimbatore: Putting an end to the leopard scare in Chittepalayam Village in Sirumugai, the forest department has placed two cages to capture the animal which has been frequently preying on livestock and pets. The decision has brought a huge sigh of relief for the farmers.

The villagers had alerted the foresters of leopard movement after several of their livestock and pets were preyed by the animal. After analysing the pug marks and bite marks, the foresters confirmed the presence of the leopard frequenting the village. Two traps have been brought from Sathyamangalam tiger reserve to capture the leopard", said Sirumugai forest range officer N Manoharan.
The cages were placed at Periyathottam area, where the leopard lastly hunted and the other cage at Palkaaran Salai area, on the foothills of the mountain.
Reassuring the villagers, the Forest officer Manoharan said, 'Dogs will be kept as baits in the cages to capture the leopard. Also, anti-poaching guards will be deployed for night patrolling in the area to monitor the movement of leopards."
It may be recalled that similar traps were set in Mothepalayam village in the Sirumugai forest range last year, the captured leopard was later released into the reserve area in Bhavani Sagar.
