"While the new bridge construction work might take another six months, the highways department should retain the old bridge for commuting purposes. If the old bridge is demolished, all vehicles enroute to Sholaiyar dam, Urulikkal, Kurangamudi, Injiparai, Manika, Villoni, Mazhukkaparai and vehicles headed towards Kerala have to take a detour around 10 km through Pollachi road", the public noted.
A resident from Rottikadai area informed that the bridge built during the British era is in a bad state, hence the highways department decided to demolish the bridge and build a new bridge.
"A notice board has been placed by the highways department alerting on temporary traffic diversion. However, the diversion would cause great ordeal to the tea plantation workers for whom a detour of 20 km every day is impossible", he added.
Especially people living on Rottikadai and Stanmore will not have buses to commute, he lamented.
Hence, the residents of Valparai have decided to collect signatures from the public to retain the old bridge until the construction works of the new bridge is completed. "The collected signatures will be submitted as a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector", they told.
