Farmers petition Collector to release promised volume of water through Parambikulam Aliyar Irrigation scheme

Coimbatore: Citing the discrepancy in the number of days water has been released through the Parambikulam Aliyar Irrigation scheme, the Pollachi farmers have petitioned to the District Collector on Monday to ensure they receive the promised volume of water, as around 11,181 acres of farmland depends on the water for irrigation.

"Under the Parambikulam Aliyar Irrigation scheme, the farm lands are supposed to receive water for 70 days. While, the authorities informed that water would be provided on a rotational basis from November 4, 2019 to March 18, 2020, we have received water for only 35 days", the farmers lamented.

As around 11,181 acres of farmland are completely dependent on the water through the Parambikulam Aliyar Irrigation Scheme, any delays and shortage would vastly affect the cultivation, they informed.

Coconut, plantain and corn crops will take a major hit if water is not released for the promised number of days, they told.

The farmers, therefore, petitioned the District Collector to take necessary steps to release water for the remaining days up to to March 4.
