Coimbatore: Over 250 tribals of 16 settlements in Valparai were detained on Monday, after they proceeded to march towards the Coimbatore District Collectorate to submit a petition on several long their standing pleas including patta for agricultural land.

The tribes belonging to Kadar, Muthuvar, Pulaiyar, Irular, Malasar and Malaisar gathered on Sunday night at Gandhi Statue and agitated against the administration for not providing them arrangements for stay. After a brief commotion, they were provided night stay at a private hall by the Village administration officer.

Today morning, when they commenced their rally to march 120 km to meet the District Collector K Rajamani, they were stopped by the police officials.

Valparai DSP Vivekanandan held peace talks to pacify the tribals. As the talks failed, the tribals who commenced their march were courted arrest.

Meanwhile, the Valparai Merchants Association met the tribal people and showed their support for their rally. As a mark of solidarity and condemning the police for detaining the tribal people, shops were closed down in Valparai.

Security was beefed up in the hilly town, as a matter of precaution.
