Coimbatore: Hundreds of tribals Tense moments prevailed in Valparai on Monday morning as over 250 tribals of 16 tribal settlements in Valparai laid siege in front of Gandhi statue.
As informed earlier, representatives of tribal communities including Kadar, Muthuvar, Pulaiyar, Irular, Malasar gathered to march to the District Collectorate in Coimbatore to highlight their plight and their long pending pleas.
As they were not provided place to stay, they laid seige at the Gandhi Statue. Hearing the news, the Village Administrative Officer held talks with them and arranged for their stay at a private hall, nearby. For security reasons, police were also deployed in the area.
It may be recalled that the tribals on Saturday apprised that they would hold a rally from Valparai to Coimbatore Collectorate, covering 120 kilometres to submit their pleas including rights and patta for their residential and agricultural land and alternate space in the reserve forests among others.
The decision for 120 km was arrived after the reconciliation talks held at the Tahsildhar office headed by MLA Kasturi Vasu failed.
