Coimbatore: The Thaipoosam festival of the ancient Sri Subramaniyaswamy Temple at Valparai began with the hoisting of the flag on Feb 4. The main event of the Thaipoosam festival, the 'Kavadi' procession took place today. Devotees who undertook fasting and prayers did the traditional Anga Alagu Kavadi and Paravai Kavadi and others carried the Paal Kudam (Milk pots).

The main event of the Thaipoosam festival, the 'Kavadi' procession took place today. Devotees who undertook fasting and prayers did the traditional Anga Alagu Kavadi and Paravai Kavadi and others carried the Paal Kudam (Milk pots).

Special prayers were offered at the Nallakaathu grounds and the procession which began from the grounds went through the New bus stand, Stanmore Junction, Gandhi statue and the old bus stand before they reached the temple. At the temple, Sri Subramaniyaswamy was offered the milk and other theerthams, with which the prayers concluded.
Following this, Annadhanam took place, where more than 10,000 people were offered food. The Annadhanam was inaugurated by MLA Kasthurivasu, Municipal Commissioner Pavanraj and Tahsildar Venkatachalam. A group of 300 students under the leadership of the Valparai Government college Principal Muralidharan were involved in serving the Annadhanam.

The procession of deities, Murugan with Valli and Deivaanai will take place in the night, following which cultural programmes will take place.
The 'maha abishekam' will also take place at night and the event will conclude with a show of fireworks. The organisers of the festival have done a commendable job and devotees from the 56 estates in the area took part in the festivities.
The police led by the Police Inspector Balamurugan, offered protection during the festivities that took place during Thaipoosam.
