Minister Dindigul Sreenivasan inaugurates 25th State level Forest Dept's Sports Meet in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: After sparking a major controversy in Mudumalai, the Tamil Nadu Forest Minister Dindigul Sreenivasan inaugurated the 25th State-level forest department sports meet in Coimbatore on Friday. Coimbatore: After sparking a major controversy in Mudumalai, the Tamil Nadu Forest Minister Dindigul Sreenivasan inaugurated the 25th State-level forest department sports meet in Coimbatore on Friday. He declared open the sports meet by releasing balloons at the Tamil Nadu Forest college grounds, here. 

    

Over 950 participants comprising of forest officers and staffs of 13 zones in Tamil Nadu are taking part in the three-day sports meet, kicked off today. Events like athletics, volleyball, kabaddi, cricket, powerlifting, weight lifting, swimming, billiards, rifle shooting will be conducted. 

Earlier, Minister Dindigul C Sreenivasan, along with S.P Velumani, Minister for Municipal Administration and rural development and Pollachi V Jayaraman, Deputy Speaker of Tamil Nadu legislative assembly hoisted the flag and lighted the lamp for the sports meet.



"The three-day sports meet will showcase the physical strength, team coordination, sportsmanship and leadership among the forest officials and staffs. Last year, Tamil Nadu secured 30 medals and overall stood at 7th position in the National level competitions held at Chhattisgarh", informed Durai Rasu, IFS.

He added that the sports meet will be a stress buster for the team.

Addressing the meet, the Minister of Forests, Dindigul C Sreenivasan remarked that the State government has improved road connectivity to tribal hamlets of Tamil Nadu by alloting a budget of Rs 57 crores, covering a stretch of 570 Km.

He further added that the government is planning to build a training centre at Coimbatore and in Vaigai dam for forest officials at a budget of Rs 15.5 crore. 



"Physical fitness is very crucial. Sports meet not only motivates the employees to focus on fitness but also strengthens their bond and nurtures their mental fitness", the Minister opined.

The Minister remarked that he could proudly vouch that the forest department provides job opportunity for over 2000 candidates purely on the basis of talent and not money.

The Minister also distributed compensation and welfare measures to the tribal people of the region. 

The winners of this competition will take part in the national level competitions that are to be held at Bhuveshwar from March 3-7, 2020. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners representing TN Forest department at the national meet.
