Coimbatore: Coimbatore is all set to host a one-of-a-kind exhibition,Thambaalam, a curated expo showcasing antique and contemporary platters on February 10-11. An exclusive preview of the exhibition for the members of the Crafts Council of India was held today at Kumaraguru College of technology, here.
Since time immemorial, Thambaalam (a platter) has always been an integral part of South Indian tradition. Thambaalam by Crafts Council of Tamil Nadu (CCTN) is an unique display by artisans across the nation who have created Thamboolams of different kinds.
"It's an effort to collect, document and exhibit, antique Thambaalams made from a wide range of materials including silver, brass, wood and stone. Some of the Thambaalams showcased here are also from our personal collections and from the homes of family and friends", informed Sujini Balu, Curator, CCTN, Coimbatore
This expo also reflects the tradition and heritage of our region, she added.
"Crafts like Kashmiri papier-mache, walnut wood carving, wood inlay, embossing on metal, Cheriyal, Bidri, Pattanchitra are among many arts that will be displayed in this event.
A wide collection of Thambaalam will be available for sale during the event so that the visitors can take time to shop and take home an exquisite piece of traditionand fine craftsmanship", told Sujini Balu, President of CCTN, Coimbatore.
The organisers also shared that more than 150 handcrafted platters across the country will be displayed at the two-day expo. CCTN has been closely working with the artisans across the nation by providing them with design inputs. The initiative has truly helped to revive and reinvent many Thambaalam.
There will be more than 150 handcrafted exhibits on display at this event.
The exhibition will be held at Koodam Hall, opposite to Carmel Garden School, Pulikulam on February 10-11 from 10 AM to 6.30 PM. Entry for the exhibition is free.
