Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation is preparing to commission the third solar power plant at Ukkadam. The 3.6MW plant is the largest the Corporation has installed, so far.
The plant will be installed on the 15 acres of land adjacent to the sewage treatment plant (STP) at Ukkadam. The Rs 17 crore facility will have 1,286 solar panels, each with a capacity of 320W.
Corporation Commissioner, J Sravan Kumar said "While the deadline for functioning of the plant was set for June 2020, all major works have been completed. So, the plant will start functioning within a month or two."
He added that two solar plants each with a capacity of 1MW at Ukkadam and Kavundampalayam are already operational . “Since last year, the first solar power plant at Ukkadam has been generating 15 lakh units every month. And, Corporation has been able to save a huge sum, which otherwise would have gone towards paying electricity bill for operating the water pumping station at Velliangadu,” informed the Commissioner.
The plant at Kavundampalayam came into operation, a month ago. It may be noted that these power plants were set up at places which used to be dump yards, earlier.
