Coimbatore: On Thursday morning, the road near Pazhathottam in Sirumugai caved in for 3 feet leaving a lorry stuck. The public alleged that the cave-in could have been due to sub standard road quality.
Coimbatore: On Thursday morning, the road near Pazhathottam in Sirumugai caved in for 3 feet leaving a lorry stuck. The public alleged that the cave-in could have been due to sub standard road quality.
Irked by the incident, the residents of Pazhathottam area in Sirumugai laid siege on the road and demanded to relay the roads which they suspect to be laid in substandard quality.
Road works are being carried out by the highways department in Mettupalayam at an estimated cost of Rs. 16.75 crore. Presently, works are underway between Ramaswamy Nagar area of Odanthurai Panchayat to Pazhathottam near Sirumugai, 15 km stretch. The road connects many villages around the area including Pazhathottam, Lingapuram, Vachinampalayam and others.
As the area is surrounded by acres of banana plantations, lorries and pick up trucks frequent the roads regularly to load bananas and unload fertilisers.
Today morning, a lorry which was passing through Pazhathottam near Sirumugai got stuck, after the road caved in upto 3 feet. The right side wheel of the lorry got stuck in the trench and was unable to move. After the truck was lifted with the help of a crane, the villagers alerted the highway officials on the 3-foot pit.
The officials visited the spot and explained that the pit was caused due to water pipes laid underneath the road. Skeptical on the reasons, the public have requested the officials to ensure if roads are laid properly and are safe to use.
They also requested to construct barrier walls on both the sides of the road as the Pazhathottam is close to Bhavani River.
The incident caused a stir in the area and traffic was halted for a brief time.
