Coimbatore: Hundreds of dead fish were found floating on the surface of Rajavaaikal in Nanjundapuram here on Thursday, possibly due to untreated effluents mixed in the water body.
Coimbatore: Hundreds of dead fish were found floating on the surface of Rajavaaikal in Nanjundapuram here on Thursday, possibly due to untreated effluents mixed in the water body.
Inspecting the Rajavaaikal which comes under the East Zone of the Corporation, MLA N. Karthik urged the officials to immediately remove the dead fish.
"The dead fish could pose serious health hazards to the residents nearby, hence have urged the officials to clear them", he told.
It is reported that the public have also demanded the officials to immediately clear the dead fishes due to foul smell and birds crowding the area to feed on the fishes.
Alleging that he had proposed to desilt the water bodies in and around Coimbatore including Noyyal river, Rajavaaikal, its adjoining streams and Sanganoor stream, he said poor maintenance is the reason for such mishaps.
"While the State government boasts to have invested several crores in developmental works, poor execution can be visibly seen. Increasing negligence, lack of conservation of water bodies and releasing untreated Industrial effluents and sewage water into water bodies needs to be addressed on priority", he stressed.
