And, one such school in Coimbatore, the Masakalipalayam Corporation Middle School is not only the second home for children but also their mothers. While the children are taught academics, their moms are trained on acquiring skillsets.

And, one such school in Coimbatore, the Masakalipalayam Corporation Middle School is not only the second home for children but also their mothers. While the children are taught academics, their moms are trained on acquiring skillsets.
This initiative by the School has transformed the lives of 10 women who are no more 'just' house wives but tailors, importantly, empowered women.
From house wives to self-employed women, around 10 women whose wards are students at the school were provided with free tailoring classes for three weeks. Starting from designer blouses to trendy churidars, these mothers were taught by experts from the field.
With the completion of the training, most of the moms have gained courage to start their own tailoring business and make an earning out of it.
Prior to the classes, the women were totally dependent on their husbands for financial support. Now, they have a way to be financially independent.
According to School Headmistress K Mythili, "District Information System for Education (DISE) mandates every school to involve the public in some activity, and our school has followed this mandate. One of the best ways to help homemakers is to help them earn by imparting skillset to them."
She added that this decision was made during the parents-teachers meeting held in July 2019. The school got the help of 61-year-old T Vasanthamani from Masakalipalayam to teach homemakers for free tailoring class.
Vasanthamani who was instrumental in making these house wives into tailors, said "Since many of them are new to this field, I had to teach them from basics. Now, the women are able to do all kinds of stitching, including knitting sweaters."
S Priya (35), who underwent the training, said she could stitch a different types of garments including designer blouse, and western outfits for kids.
The free tailoring classes are conducted thrice in a week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays on the school premises. The administration is also taking the contribution of the trained women to stitch clothes for students during school events.
Though many women have started approaching the school after hearing the news, the administration wants to help only the mothers of the school students.
