Coimbatore: Farmers in Mettupalayam (MTP) staged an agitation in front of MTP bus stand on Wednesday demanding steps against wildlife intrusion and to express their disapproval on the 2020-21 budget proposed by the State and Centre.

More than 100 farmers of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association wore masks of Iconic Farmer leader C Narayanasamy and protested against the State and Central government for not allocating adequate welfare schemes to uplift agriculture and the farmers.
The protestors led by the Association's Secretary Venugopal expressed their discontent over the recent budgets unveiled by both State and Centre government. "The budgets are not favorable to the farming community. Across the nation, agriculture is ailing and farmers are in a deplorable state. In this scenario, it's disheartening to learn that the budget has no provisions for uplifting the sector. This shows the lack of concern the government has towards the farmers", they accused.
They complained that crop raids by wild animals like elephants, peacock and wild boar had become common, resulting in huge losses. As farmers have to face many uncertainties, they demanded monthly wages for the farming community.
Reitrating that several villages in around Mettupalayam and Karamadai have not been added in the second phase of Athikadavu-Avinashi project, the farmers noted that the delay in adding those villages has been overall halting the execution of the project.
