Tirupur: An eco-friendly initiative by a Knitwear company from the dollar city has transformed over 4 lakh one-time use plastic bottles that were disposed to 25,000 T-Shirts which were worn by ballkids at the Australian Open Tennis 2020.

Speaking about the initiative, the General Manager of N.C. John & Sons, located in Mudhalipalayam in Tirupur said, "Based on the proposal from the organisers of Australian Open to create eco-friendly T-shirts for ballkids, we decided to use polyester fibers which have been spun out of recyclable plastic bottles. We approached companies that were certified to produce polyester thread from plastic bottles which were then turned into garments."

Sathya, the GM of the Knitwear company added that four lakh water bottles were used to produce 25,000 T-shirts, which were shipped to Australia.

"Our efforts won many appreciations from the organisers who were very happy with the output. If more companies can adopt to such eco-friendly production, the pollution and environmental degradation could be reduced to a great extent", he opined.

All 'ballkids', their trainers and other officials wore these t-shirts from Tirupur at the Australian Open 2020, which was held between January 14 to February 2 at Melbourne Park. Globally accalaimed Tirupur Knitwear industry now has another feather in its cap through this novel initiative.
