Coimbatore: In observance with World Cancer Day which aims to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment, GEM hospital along with Rotary Club Of Coimbatore inaugurated a scheme ‘Care for Life’, intended to provide free treatment for poor patients suffering from gastrointestinal cancer.
Coimbatore: In observance with World Cancer Day which aims to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment, GEM hospital along with Rotary Club Of Coimbatore inaugurated a scheme ‘Care for Life’, intended to provide free treatment for poor patients suffering from gastrointestinal cancer.
Dr R V Ramani, Founder And Managing Trustee of Sankara Eye Care Institutions, was the Chief Guest and Dr B. Asokan, Dean, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital was the Guest Of Honour for the day.
The event was presided over by Dr C. Palanivelu, Chairman, GEM Hospital & Research centre, Coimbatore. And, Rotary Clubs of Lake Norman Huntersville and of Palm Springs, USA are the international partners for the initiative.
‘Care for Life’
The initiative ‘Care for Life’ is intended to create awareness about gastrointestinal cancer, which includes cancer of food pipe (esophagus), stomach, bowels (small intestine, colon, rectum), liver, pancreas, gall bladder and bile duct.
The initiative intends to pool funds from all the partners to enable free treatment for poor patients with early stage gastrointestinal cancers (Stage I and II), which can be completely cured at this stage. In India, the penetration of health insurance is less and majority of the patients pay out of their pocket for treatment or, if unable to arrange adequate finances, do not seek timely treatment.
Hence, this initiative will extent a helping hand to poor patients with curable gastrointestinal cancer and not deprive them of timely treatment due to lack of finance.
