Coimbatore: In a joint initiative by Uyir Trust and Rathinam College of Arts and Science, a short film contest on road safety was held at SNR Auditorium, here on Monday.
In their continuous effort to raise awareness among the masses on road safety, Uyir Trust has been spearheading several campaigns involving the citizens, especially school and college students.
One such recent initiative is the short film contest which was announced under three different categories - 30 seconds film, one minute film and three minute film.
According to the organisers, around 120 entries across the country were received. The best films were selected and awarded, today with cash prizes.
Speaking at the event, Dr S Rajasekaran, Managing Trustee of Uyir Trust, "It is the dream of Uyir to make Coimbatore the safest city without road accidents. With this motive, a short film contest was announced, recently. The initiative evoked huge response with 124 entries across the nation."
He added that a panel of expert judges evaluated the films and shortlisted the best ones. The winners were awarded, today.
Greeting the gathering, Actor Sivakumar who was the Chief guest for the event lauded the initiative of focussing on road safety. He requested the students to follow road rules and told them that "It's mandatory and not optional."
"Road accident not only affects the victims but also their families and the society. Among several reasons that attribute to road accidents, alcohol is proven to be main reason for increasing fatal road accidents", he told the audience.
He requested the government to shut down the TASMAC shops. "A good government will not run TASMAC shops", he added.
"We are living in an electronic era. Amidst lot of diversions, students these days are very responsible and show great support for right things. Especially, they are very supportive with the district administration to uplift the society, which is a good sign. Similarly, their involvement to curb accidents by abiding traffic rules will bring a monumental change in reducing accidents", said K Rajamani, District Collector.
He further congratulated all the winners and praised Uyir Trust for its continuous effort in making Coimbatore, an accident free city.
Prizes worth over one lakh were presented to the winners under various categories. Actor Sivakumar along with the District Collector distributed the prizes.
Madan A Sendhil, Chairman, Rathinam Groups, Swathy Rohit, Chief Operating Officer, SNR Charitable Trust and Executive Committee Members of Uyir Trust were present at the event.
Winners:
30 Seconds Category: C J Jomon of Rathinam College of Arts and Science was the winner for his movie Hell Mate while the second place was awarded to R Raju for his movie Ner Kodu.
One Minute Category: Periyasamy won the first prize for his movie Uyir Kaappan was awarded first prize and the second place was given to Udaya Kumar for his movie Thaduppan.
3 Minute Category: The first place was awarded to Gowtham Selvaraj for his movie Kayal Vizhi and the second place was awarded to S Pratheeksha for her movie Vazhipokkan.
