Coimbatore: In a novel initiative, a collective of students from various colleges in Coimbatore have joined hands to paint a Veeralpatti Panchayat Union Primary school in South Pollachi.

The students from institutions including PSG, SNR and Bharathiyar Univeristy began painting the school on Friday and have continued the work till evening on Saturday.

Members of the organising committee have said that they could continue the work on Sunday as they have also planned to write awareness messages on the walls.

“We formed a small collective of students who were interested in helping out small schools in remote areas that needed intervention. We found out that this school was too deep inside the village to get help from the outside world,” said G. Thirunavukkarasu, who formed the collective.

When the team approached the school with the idea, the Headmistress of the school welcomed them with both hands and also helped them get sponsors to get the job done.

“Volunteering was the major requirement for the school as funding was easy to get. A total of 27 students joined the initiative and we jumped into work,” Thirunavukarasu said.

Once the school was painted, the team drew awareness diagrams and graffitis on the walls to decorate the campus in an educative manner.

“The idea of the work is to encourage local youth to take onus of helping out their village on themselves. Taking our work as an example, they can take up any such projects. We would continue such drives in the future and believe that the ripple effects they cause would help needy situations,” Thirunavukkarasu opined.

M. Kavitha, the Headmistress of the school appreciated the efforts taken by the youngsters in helping out their school, which hosts 43 students from the Veeralpaatti village.
