District Level Seminar on Solid Waste Management was held on behalf of the Rural Development Movement. Rural Development Movement Chairman NK Perumal gave the welcome address. Former Justice P Jothimani, Chairman of the National Green Tribunal State Monitoring Committee, inaugurated the seminar and said, "Biometric treatment of garbage in Tamil Nadu is underway. This work is well underway in places like Kumbakonam and Perungudi. Healthy living is essential for people. People also need to cooperate to live healthily. It is the people's duty to grade the garbage collected at home. Biodegradable garbage is used as fertilizers in farming.
Steps are being taken to dispose of the remaining waste. There is a law to impose fines and imprisonment on people who do not separate garbage at source. Corporation employees will request twice to segregate waste. The third time an official can levy Rs. 5000 fine. A person who does not consistently segregate garbage can be sentenced to 6 months in prison. Local authorities are raising awareness to dispose off garbage. Fines and imprisonment are not strictly enforced. It will come into effect over time.
It is punishable to burn the trash as it is harmful to the environment and the health of the people. The Trichy Corporation is functioning well. Circular has been issued to all officials not to bring any medical waste from Kerala to Tamil Nadu. Similarly, a letter from the Tamil Nadu DGP has been written to urge the government to take stringent action against those who dump medical waste.
Similarly, the staff at the collection centre are strictly ordered to monitor it. In addition, those who have medical waste to Tamil Nadu will be severely punished. I do not want to talk about the hydrocarbon project as the case is still pending. Fertilizer is made from human waste on behalf of the Rural Development Movement. Vegetables are produced using this fertilizer. 5 countries have certified these vegetables are of good quality. Composting of human waste must be expanded."
