Bank employees strike for second day; ₹500 crore transactions halted in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Bank employees in Coimbatore have been on strike for the second day, after bank employees announced a two-day strike demanding 12-point demands, including a pay hike.

Coimbatore: Bank employees in Coimbatore have been on strike for the second day, after bank employees announced a two-day strike demanding 12-point demands, including a pay hike.

All India level bank employees are on a two-day strike demanding 12-point demands, including a 20% pay hike, the cancellation of the new pension scheme, resolving pending pension issues, declaring Saturday and Sunday as banking holidays, resolving issues faced by women and fixing working hours for officials. 



As part of the strike, Bank employees staged a demonstration in front of Bank of Baroda near Coimbatore Railway Station yesterday to assert their demands. More than 1,000 employees participated in the protest that was led by Rajavelu, District President of All India Bank Staff Officers Union and raised slogans asserting their demands. 

About 800 banks are not functioning due to strike by bank employees in Coimbatore district and Rs 500 crore transactions has been affected along with ₹50 crores of cash transactions bank employees union executives said. Bank employees' unions said that if their demands were not met, the next strike will be held in March, as already announced, and warned that they would go on indefinite strike from April 1 if their demands aren't met by that time.

In addition, more than 31 lakh cheque transactions in cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi have been affected because of the strike. All India Bank Employees Union General Secretary Venkatachalam said that as a result of the strike, Rs 23,000 crore worth cheque transactions had been affected.
