Coimbatore: All the 28 elephants camped at the Rejuvenation Camp at Mettuplayam here are all set to bid adieu to their fellow mates, as the 48-day camp draws to a close tomorrow.

The 12th annual rejuvenation camp for temple and mutt elephants in the State began at Thekkampatti, near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department was flagged off on December 15, 2019.

Elephants from various temples and mutts across the State and Puduchery took part in the 48-day camp which ends today, Thursday.

During the 48-day period, the elephants were treated for their illness and nutritious food including multiple cereals, fruits, herbs and dietary supplements were fed to the elephants. A seven-member team of vetenarians were stationed at the camp to monitor and analyse the health condition of each elephant and propose customised dietary supplements.

While few elephants were treated for obesity, some were treated for infections relating to stomach and foot.

"This camp provided an opportunity for the elephants to mingle with their species. We could witness their excitement and bonding by seeing them hug and trumpet in joy", opined a Mahout.

"And, importantly the elephants which are always housed in cement concrete structures had a great time relaxing in open habitat filled with greenery and a water body", stated another Mahout who is all set to leave along with his elephant to a Mutt.

The camp also transformed into an important tourist destination, especially for children who were enthralled to see the elephants bathe, eat and relax in an open environment.

Special arrangements are being made to safely transport the elephants to their respective temples.
