Tirupur: Tense situation prevailed at the District Collectorate here after a section of farmers from the district staged a dharna against the State government for alleged delay in compensating for land acquisition for setting up high tension towers in agricultural land in Tirupur.

A majority of the protesting farmers were from Semmipalayam Village, near Palladam in Tirupur district, demanded to release the promised compensation and also approve additional compensation to farmers whose livelihood has been affected due to acquisition.

Among the protesting farmers, a distressed woman farmer vowed to surrender her nuptial chain (Thaali) if the compensation is not provided with immediate effect.
With no satisfactory outcome, the farmers quit the protest and apprised the District Collector that they would engage in a series of agitations, if necessary action is not initiated.
