Coimbatore: Paying tribute to the 71st Republic Day, NGO Siruthuli kick-started a cleaning drive at South Solai Pond near the Vellakinar Government Hospital on Sunday.

"The South Solai Pond is important for conserving the groundwater level of Vellakinar area. However, lack of maintenance has left the pond in a bad state filled with garbage. The waterways leading to the pond are ill-maintained as wastewater flows into the pond untreated", said a release.

In a bid to rejuvenate the water body, Siruthuli along with 'Vellakinar Neer Matrum Pasumai Pathugapu' organization, NSS students of SNS College and residents of Vellakinar commenced the cleaning work at the pond, on Sunday.
In the joint effort, tonnes of plastic waste were removed from the water body, added the release.

"Siruthuli has planned to remove the garbage and wastes from the pond. Also, treat the wastewater in a natural way and upgrade the waterway leading to the pond, before summer. The first phase of operations have already begun. The cleaning drive will help the pond to be filled with fresh water, thus improve groundwater", the release informed.
The statement from the NGO added that this effort will attract several species of birds to the pond.
