In the meeting, he criticised the BJP rule under PM Modi very strongly. He said that, “Whether its business, economy, agriculture or bilateral relationships with countries, everything have taken a major dip in the last 5 years of Modi rule. The textile industry has also taken a big hit during the Modi rule and cities like Coimbatore, Tirupur and Karur have been hit badly. Whatever was done in the last 5 years have been a unmitigated disaster. The loss of demonetisation was much higher than that of the 2004 tsunami.
There’s nothing wrong with the GST tax but the extremely poor implementation of the tax was another main reason for the jolting of the economy. It’s not just in Coimbatore, country-wide micro, small and medium scale industries have suffered immeasurably. Over 50,000 such units have been closed down in Tamilnadu and the primary reason for this has been the mindless demonetisation and poor implementation of GST.
It is the duty of the opposition to oppose the wrong moves of the ruling government and take it to the people. The failure to do so by the opposition was the major reason in Modi coming back to power after a disastrous 5 years.
The slide in the economy started way back in 2018 itself and the fact that they won after such a poor show in the government has made them more arrogant in implementing more anti-people policies like Triple Talaq, CAA, Article 370 and NRC.
I feel extremely proud of the youngsters who are participating in protests against CAA and I bow down to them. The protests have continued strongly in almost all North Indian states including Delhi and Kolkata. The questions we raised against CAA in the parliament have till now not been answered and legal and constitutional experts have all commented saying that this law is not valid.
Instead of talking with people who are opposing and understanding your concerns, they continue to be arrogant about their implementation. This is what happened with demonetisation and GST too. Let them select any 5 leaders who are protesting against CAA / NRC and debate with PM Modi and lets see if Modi can answer to these questions. The media is also stifled big time under the Modi rule.
Statistics show that the economy is suffering more than anytime in the last 42 years and more than 3 crore people have lost their jobs in India. More than 15 lakh have lost their jobs in the software industry alone. This is the reason why the projected GDP growth is 4.8%. More than 5000 homes are left unsold in Coimbatore alone. Labourers who were going for jobs 7 days in a week are now not having any work. The Indian students and young women are filling up the vacuum created in the politics and political parties should fight with vigour”, he said.
During the public meeting, AICC Secretary - Incharge Sanjay Dutt, Tamilnadu Congress Party President Azhagiri, Mayura Jayakumar, Mohan Kumaramangalam, Manoharan, Venus Mani and others participated in this event.
