Minister SP Velumani visits Waste Mgt Expo; says new Solid Waste Mgt rules will be announced

In, the last eight years Rs.3853 crore has been utilised to deal the solid waste management, particularly, in the past three years Rs. 2045 crores worth of works has been carried out", said Minister SP Velumani at an event held here on Friday.

Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme S.P. Velumani today visited the waste management exhibition held at Sri Krishna Arts and Science College.



Ministry of HRD (MHRD), Mahatma Gandhi National Council for Rural Education (MGNCRE), Hyderabad, Institutions Innovation Council and Sri Krishna Arts and Science College (SKASC), Kuniamuthur, Coimbatore have jointly organised a two-day Waste Management and Social Entrepreneurship-Industry-Academia meet at the college. 



Addressing the audience, Minister S.P. Velumani said that in last eight years about Rs. 88,925 crores has been spent in the State towards ensuring basic amenities like water roads, street lights, drainage, solid waste management etc. 

"In 12,524 village panchayats, 66,025 sanitary workers are involved in collecting solid wastes. The State government soon in consultation with the Central government will amend the MSW policy and plans to introduce new solid waste management rules", he informed. 

He added that 180 metric tonne capacity of biogas is produced from degradable wastes collected from hotels, restaurant, lodges, marriage hall, vegetable mart and butcher shop incorporation and municipality limit. For implementing this, Rs.30.39 crore has been allotted to install biogas plants at various locations in several districts. 

Briefing on aggregation of wastes, the Minister for Municipal Administration informed that wastes are segregated at source like degradable and non-degradable. Degradable wastes are converted to biogas and manures. The State has reitrated that public, industries corporations and commercials establishments should extend their cooperation to manage soild waste management, the efficient way. 

He also stated that the government has also prepared a handbook and guidelines on ways to manage solid wastes.
