He was given a honourary welcome by the fire and rescue officials. Addressing the firefighters, Sylendra Babu IPS commended the firefighters for their bravery and informed that Tamil Nadu tops the medal tally with 46 medals in the competition held for the Indian Fire and Rescue Service.
He informed that there are 331 fire stations in Tamil Nadu. In the past year, 25,400 fires have been attended and more than 26,000 calls have been received regarding fire alarms.
He informed that last year, firefighters have rescued around 250 people and 1200 animals trapped in various fire accidents.
Briefing on the ongoing developmental activities in the department, the Director, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services apprised that a 20-member special rescue team has been formed in each district to attend to major fire accidents. And, 700 fire brigade personnel are being exclusively trained to control forest fires in Tamil Nadu forests.
Sylendra Babu, Director of Fire and Rescue department also cited the recent incident in which firefighters thwarted forest fire in Thakkalai a town in Kanyakumari district, yesterday.
He further added that 3,600 school children across Tamil Nadu have been trained to prevent fire and how to respond on such eventualities. The students are also been educated to catch snakes, safely.
He added saying, those who are interested in acquiring training in fire and rescue operations can contact the fire department in their respective district.
