Coimbatore: NGO Nirangal who work closely with other LGBTQ collectives and organizations in South India, advocating gender equality and creating awareness for marginalized communities held a press meet at the Coimbatore Press Club here on Tuesday to reinstate their mission to end discrimination and violence against gender and sexuality minorities and sex workers in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Addressing the press, Siva, Co-Founder of NGO Nirangal briefed on the gender equality issues still prevailing in our society, at large. He threw light on the mindset of the people belonging to LGBTQ community and how their self respect has been shattered by the society.
He informed that there is a long way to go in terms of creating awareness among the masses on the third gender. "With the help of media, we can certainly achieve it", he told the reporters.
Recalling and thanking Dr. M. Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for recognising the people of third gender and introducing welfare schemes for them, Siva alleged that it is disappointing that the Central government has not allotted any funds for their welfare of LGBTQ community.
"While the Centre promised to announce welfare schemes for the LGBTQ community, even issuance of identity cards are being delayed", he pointed.
Executive members of the NGO, Selvam, Delphina and others were present.
