Permission denied for Islamic organizations to host anti-CAA rally

Coimbatore: Citing that many protests have already been carried out by Islamic organisations against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the city, the City Police Commissioner has denied permission to hold a rally against CAA on Avinashi road.

Earlier, All Jamaat Organisations jointly petitioned the City Police Commissioner, Sumit Sharan seeking permission to hold an Anti-CAA rally from VOC grounds to CODISSIA on Avinashi road on February 2., 2020. 

In this regard, a statement has been issued by the City Police Commissioner on Tuesday, citing reasons for denying permission to hold the rally. 

"On behalf of the Federation of All Jamaat and District Islamic organisations, Raja Hussain filed a petition seeking permission to hold a rally against CAA from the VOC grounds to CODISSIA on February 2, 2020. At the review meeting held today to discuss on their petition, representatives from Islamic organisations also took part and it was announced that permission cannot be granted to hold the rally", the release said. 

"On behalf of all Jamaat, already more than 50 Anti-CAA protests have already taken place in various parts of the city, including demonstrations, rallies, human chains, leaflet distribution, shutting down of shops and meetings. With accordance to the Court order that states protests should be carried out only in the outskirts, and since Avinashi road is one of the busiest roads in the city, permission has been denied", the Commissioner told in the release.
