No orders can stop us, show Thadagam Brick Kilns

Coimbatore: Despite a standing order from the Coimbatore District Collector K. Rajamani, imposing a ban on all the 175 brick kiln chambers in the Thadagam Valley months back, there seems to be no flinch from them as they run fresh business, everyday.

All the chimneys that adorn the valley lets out smoke often depicting the busy work at the illegal kilns.

According to sources, the kilns have not yielded to the pressure mounted by the district administration with a ban, which was followed by reports of irregularities and official denial of patronage from various government departments.

While the forest department came out first issuing a statement claiming that no permission had been given to the chambers, the pollution control board followed with a statement claiming that they had not given environmental approval to any chamber, as well. They also issued notices to a few chambers last year demanding immediate closure.

However, nothing seems to intervene their operation as they continue to violate norms and run business illegally.

According to S. Ganesh, a resident of Thadagam, trucks carrying freshly baked bricks can be seen all over Thadagam till date.

“There has been no flinch from the chambers despite such pressure from authorities. Pollution continues like before and if we question them, they say we have links with anti-social elements,” he pondered.

A petition was also given to the District Collector on Tuesday in this regard.
