Coimbatore: Maatu Pongal was celebrated in a grand manner at the elephant rejuvenation camp in Mettupalayam where 28 elephants from various temples and mutts are relaxing since December 15, 2019.
Coimbatore: Maatu Pongal was celebrated in a grand manner at the elephant rejuvenation camp in Mettupalayam where 28 elephants from various temples and mutts are relaxing since December 15, 2019.

The celebrations were organised by the Forest department and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) at the camp in which officials, forest staff and mahouts along with the elephants took part.

The Gaja Pooja by elephants drew the attentions of the spectators. All the 28 elephants were given a bath in the Bhavani river and decorated for the event. And, the Mahouts were gifted with new dhotis.

Later, Pongal was prepared with raw rice and jaggery in earthen pots, the traditional way. Pongal, fruits and jaggery were fed to the elephants.
