The Nilgiris: At the grievance redressal day held at Ooty District Collectorate, today, more than 50 people belonging to the Kurumba tribe petitioned the Collectorate to issue caste certificates.
The Kurumba tribes living in Karamoola village near Bitharkad, Gudalur stated that "Due to non issuance of caste certificate, the tribal people in the Karamoola area are unable to benefit through the special schemes announced for scheduled tribe by the State and Centre government."
They also lamented that they are unable to enroll children in schools due to caste certificate confirming their ST identity.
The petitioners also alleged of lack of basic facilities like road connectivity. "Due to poor roads, the school-going students have to travel 4 kms through the forest area to access schools. Even ambulances cannot reach us", they noted.
