Suresh (42), a labourer working in Thonimudi estate was returning home after fixing shamianas for Pongal celebrations at their estate to be held on January 16.
Unexpectedly, a lone wild elephant strayed into the estate and started chasing the labourers. While all ran hither and thither, Suresh tripped off and fell down and was trampled by the elephant.
Upon information, the police and forest department arrived to the spot and retrieved the body and sent it to autopsy. Selvan, Director of Anaimalai Tiger Reserve, met the family of the deceased and expressed his condolences.
The relatives and estate workers of Thonimudi estate have urged the forest officials to chase away the lone elephant which has camped in the estate. The death of a co-worker ahead of Pongal festival has deeply saddened the estate workers.
