Coimbatore: Two women who were selling Rose winged parakeets in the streets of Thudiyalur on Saturday were booked and remanded in judicial custody here.
The women identified as S. Krishnaveni and T. Backiam were selling parakeets and other wild birds in places including Saravanampatti, Keeranatham, Thudiyalur, Sungam Bypass Road and in a few places in Tirupur in recent times.
A case was also registered against Krishnaveni in Trissur, Kerala for selling wild birds that are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act (WPA), 1972.
Since various other cases were pending against her in the Coimbatore Forest Division, she was identified as a habitual offender and was produced before a judicial magistrate, who sentenced her to judicial custody along with her accomplice Backiam.
Foresters have warned people not to sell or raise rose ringed parakeets that come under the schedule four of the (WPA, 1972).
