Coimbatore: The Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development, S P Velumani was the chief guest in the Maamazhai Potrudhum event. During the event he shared information that will bring joy to many from Coimbatore who have been longing for the rejuvenation of the River Noyyal - the mother of Coimbatore.

While speaking in the event he said, "Water bodies in Coimbatore which were dry few years ago were brought to life by the work of these organisations. The government in its part will extend maximum support to them.
Rs. 230 crores have been alloted for Noyyal rejuvenation by the state government two days ago. Even under Smart City project, 8 lakes have been taken up for rejuvenation and now Kurichi lake has been added to the list. In a few months time Coimbatore will have a different look with lakes filled with water always and beautified lake sides where people can sit and relax".

The lake rejuvenation activity has been picking up pace in the last few years through the active work of NGOs and more generous fund allocation for beautification by the government. Once the lake bund beautification work is completed, the lakes of Coimbatore will surely become a scenic location for the public to enjoy.
The thing to watch out for the government would be to maintain the biodiversity in our lakes and ensure that they are not destroyed for the sake of beautification.
