The Nilgiris: Bringing much joy and recognition among the indigenous tribal people living in the Nilgiris, Pon Dose belonging to Todar community was elected as the District Chairman, on Saturday. This is the first time, a tribal person has been elected for the post.

The Chairman and Vice Chairman sworn in today in the presence of Leela, District Panchayat Election Officer at the District Collectorate.
In District ward member elections, DMK won in 4 places, AIADMK in 2 and CPM in 1, DMK won the seat for District Chairman which was reserved for scheduled tribe.
It may be noted that Toda population in the Nilgiris district is only around 2000. The Toda lands are now a part of The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated International Biosphere Reserve; their territory is declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.
