The Nilgiris: The 108th car festival of the 150 year old Bhavaneeshwarar Temple, Ooty began yesterday. Each year the festival happens in the month of Margazhi. The main event of the celebration, the car procession took place today. Hundreds of men belonging to the Toda tribe, dressed in their traditional costume, took the car procession through the main streets of Ooty.

The procession started from the Temple and was taken through the Central Bus Stand and Main Bazaar and reached the Mariamman Temple. Special prayers were performed there.

Following this, the Toda men gathered together in a circle, held hands and performed their traditional folk dance. During the dance they also sang prayers for good rains in the New year, health and prosperity of the people and for farming to flourish.
People who gathered to watch the traditional dance of the Todas were captivated by the festivities.
