Coimbatore: Over 300 DMK cadres here were detained by the police for protesting against the Micro Composting Centre (MCC) under construction in Ward No: 57, GV Residency.

The protest was led by Singanallur MLA N Karthik, who said "Corporation is planning to implement MCCs across all wards to decentralise wastes and convert them into organic manure. MCCs are being set in public places such as open spaces, grounds, parks etc. By doing so, the corporation is trying to turn the city into a garbage dump. The plan is not feasible to be implemented in residential areas. Outskirts and less populated ares, are the right place for such projects."
He added that the MCC which is under construction at GV Residency is carried by flouting the rules. Residents from GV Residency and nearby areas like Periyar Nagar, Annai Indira Nagar, Bharathi Nagar, Anna Nagar have been strongly opposing the plant".
"The MCC will lead to health hazards to the residents as it would attract lot of mosquitoes and files. Also, the odour emanating from the centre would cause severe inconvenience to the residents", he noted.
MLA Karthik urged that the corporation should stop construction of MCCs, otherwise a series of protests would be held along with people.
More than 300 protesters were arrested for protesting without permission.
