Coimbatore: A major tragedy was averted as the roofing of a government-aided school collapsed in Valparai on Thursday. Luckily, no student or staff were injured.
The 61-year-old government aided school is located inside Kanjamalai estate in Valparai. Due to frequent elephant attacks, the walls and the roofing of the school were said to be in a dilapidated state. Following repeated complaints from students and parents, repair works are presently underway at the school.
This noon, the students and staff moved to a nearby building for having their lunch. Unexpectedly, the roof of the school collapsed and caused severe damage to the benches and other properties inside the school building. Shocked by the accident, the workers who were having food rushed to the spot for rescue.
"The students and staff had a narrow escape. If they would have been here, many would have been grievously injured", said the construction workers in shock.
The incident caused a stir in Valparai town. Parents have urged the schools to carry out such repair works during summer holidays instead of working days.
