In a bid to rid Coimbatore of this problem, Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, Sumit Sharan has ordered to intensify raids across all checkpoints, especially around educational institutions to prevent sales and proliferation of gutka. Acting upon his order, Balaji Saravanan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) spearheaded the special teams formed to nab gutka sellers..
While on this routine, raids were conducted in the limits of the Variety Hall police station based on information that gutka masala is being sold in this area. In this raid, the Police special team with the help of Food Safety officials today confiscated over 7 lakhs worth of Gutka masala from Sankar Fancy Store godown in Raja Street.
The gutka was confiscated, the godown sealed and they arrested Nagaram (30) and Beraram (28), who are brothers.
The Deputy Commissioner said that “these raids will continue and strong legal action will be taken against those who are selling gutka masala in Coimbatore. We will not stop until Coimbatore is free from the perils of gutka.”
