Coimbatore: Around 45 underground drainage workers with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation will hereon be covered under health insurance scheme in 'risk' category that would provide Rs. 10 lakhs as claim for death arising out of unnatural causes.
Coimbatore: Around 45 underground drainage workers with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation will hereon be covered under health insurance scheme in 'risk' category that would provide Rs. 10 lakhs as claim for death arising out of unnatural causes.
As it is mandatory for the Corporations and Municipalities to provide insurance for UGD workers based on the nature of their job.
"Though sanitary workers are instructed not to get down into manholes to clear blockages, they work very closely with the drains. Hence, chances of them inhaling toxic gases from drains is still possible. During any eventualities, a comprehensive insurance will help their families with financial assistance", said a corporation official.
In a bid to make the city free of manhole deaths, CCMC is presently using 'Bandicoot', a robot to remove sludge and blockages in manholes.
According to corporation sources, CCMC is paying an annual premium for Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) for the life cover of 2 lakhs. CCMC will now pay additionally Rs. 2,000 for one underground worker, under risk insurance. In case of any accident, the worker will get Rs.1 lakh for treatment and in case of death, the victim's family will receive Rs.10 lakhs.
