Coimbatore: Showing their support to the Central trade unions, except the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) who have called for a nationwide strike today, members of several Unions in Valparai staged a protest followed by a road roko.

Citing dissatisfaction with the government's “policy and action” towards workers, over 25 crore people are taking part in the nation-wide bandh today.
The protestors who were Union members of DMK, Congress, CPI, VCK, HMS, CITU and AITUC volunteers and union executives raised slogans against the amendment to Labour laws and economic slowdown, and demanded the 12 point charter of demands. The Union members from tea estates demanded to implement the minimum wage scheme for estate workers.

Over 100 protestors including women were arrested for attempting to stage a road roko. Earlier, a rally from municipal office to Gandhi statue was held.
