Coimbatore: The Customs Sleuths seized over Rs 21 lakh worth of foreign cigarettes smuggled from Singapore at the Coimbatore airport on Saturday. Two men from Kerala were arrested and are being investigated.
Coimbatore: The Customs Sleuths seized over Rs 21 lakh worth of foreign cigarettes smuggled from Singapore at the Coimbatore airport on Saturday. Two men from Kerala were arrested and are being investigated.
Customs sleuths at the Coimbatore airport conducted a surprise raid today. Passengers aboard the Scoot Air Lines, who arrived at the airport from Singapore at the time, were intercepted. During their inspection, the officials found several packets of cigarettes hidden in a bag belonging to Afiz, a passenger from Thrissur.
In another inspection, they found similar packets of cigarettes in the baggage of Frithin Endo, another passenger from Tiruvanathapuram.
The officials declared that both Afiz and Frithin were carrying Rs.10.65 lakh and.10.80 lakh worth of cigarettes respectively, without proper documentation.
Subsequently, the customs sleuths seized the cigarettes from both parties and are continuing to investigate the two of them for possible links to additional cartels here and abroad.
