Students of St. John's School harvest 250 kg of Paddy grown in school premises

Coimbatore: In a commendable initiative by St.John's Higher Secondary School here in Press Colony, students are being engaged in cultivating vegetables and paddy in their school premises. Today, the students harvested Paddy.


Coimbatore: In a commendable initiative by St.John's Higher Secondary School here in Press Colony, students are being engaged in cultivating vegetables and paddy in their school premises. Today, the students harvested Paddy.

 

On September 26, 2019, a set of thirty-two students studying class XI and XII sowed TKM 13 (Tirur Kuppam) paddy at the 12 cents of land in the school and maintained the cultivation with organic fertilisers. Today, they harvested a bounty, 250 kg of paddy.



The harvested paddy would be polished and will be used for Pongal Festival which is nearing. The paddy will also be used in the school hostel which claims to serve only organic foods to the students. The management also added that the rice will be distributed to people involved in agricultural work.



Talking to Simplicity, R.P Aravinthan, Correspondent of St. John's Matriculation School stated that, "In a bid to create awareness on organic farming and engage students in agriculture from a very young age, we have a special group (Agriculture Science) for students. In the course, we are teaching organic methods of farming to students. As part of this course, today we are harvesting the paddy that was fully maintained and grown by the students."
