Counting of votes for the 27 districts of Tamil Nadu began this morning at 315 centers.
In a tightly fought contest, the AIADMK and DMK have been taking the lead alternatively from the very beginning of the counting. As of 6 PM in Coimbatore district, the AIADMK won one seat and the DMK one seat in the district panchayat ward. The panchayat union ward had 19 AIADMK, 14 DMK, DMDK 1 and Independent 2 winners. Pradeep from AIADMK won the Thondamuttur Panchayat Union Councilor contest by 9650 votes.
In Coimbatore district, elections were held in Madukkarai, Kinnaththaduvu, Pollachi (North), Pollachi (South) and Anaimalai (UPFA) on December 27 in the first phase. The second phase of elections were held on December 30th, 2019 in Karamadai, Annur, Sarkarsamakkulam, Periyanaickenpalayam, Sulur, Thondamuthur and Sultanpettai.
Out of the 12 panchayaths in Coimbatore, elections were held for a total of 2434 posts including 17 district panchayat wards, 155 panchayat union wards members, 228 municipal council members and 2034 municipal council members. In the first phase of the elections, 77.31% votes were cast and in the second phase 7 Rural Lok Sabha elections, 75.69% votes were cast.
3753 officials were involved for the voting process at 12 polling centers in the Coimbatore District. No political party representatives and members of the public were allowed except the candidates and the agents at the counting centers. Moreover, cell phones and electronic devices were not allowed to enter the voting center.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, State Election Commissioner Palanisamy said counting will be continued overnight and is likely to continue till tomorrow. He added that the counting of votes was taking place peacefully and that there was no untoward incident reported anywhere.
