Coimbatore: In what could be a fitting finale to the Urban Biodiversity Photography contest held in Coimbatore, a photograph of Mumbai’s Talawe wetland filled with Flamingoes has won the first prize.

The photograph taken by the Sarang Naik from Mumbai has been selected from around 150 entries received by the Centre for Urban Biodiversity Conservation and Education (CUBE). It shows the flamingoes standing in one of the Talawe wetlands as the NRI complex stands tall in the background at Seawoods in the outskirts of Navi Mumbai.

Notably, the place has a history of biodiversity conservation as the residents of the area came together to save the wetlands from being converted into a golf course. The wetlands host migratory greater and lesser flamingoes along with other wildlife.

The second prize has been given to a photograph, a Nilgai in the outskirts of Rajkot in Gujarat, taken by Neel Sureja and the third prize has been awarded to the photo of a bat flying across a light in IIS Bengaluru taken by Nikhil Moore.

Two photos including the Pelicans of Chennai Marshlands taken by Naveen Joyous and spotted owlet sitting inside a pipe at Kalapatti in Coimbatore taken by K. Balasubramaniam have been awarded the special mention fourth and fifth prize respectively.

The prize money is to be sent to the winners online and a special calendar is also to be made using the best pictures including the prize winning pictures.
