Coimbatore: The first phase of the local body elections of the 12 panchayat unions in the Coimbatore district has started today. The local body elections for five panchayat unions was held today. Voters lined up from the morning and registered their votes at Pichanur Panchayat Union Primary School in Madukarai.

Elections are held for five Panchayat Unions in Pollachi North, Pollachi South, Anaimalai, Kinathukkadavu and Madukarai. There are 2939 candidates contesting for 1220 posts in 5 panchayat unions.
A total of 3,46,350 voters were going to vote in 642 polling booths in 293 polling stations in 5 panchayats.148 of those stations were marked as high risk. Video camera recordings were done in 48 stations and 24 were monitored by a web camera. The rest are monitored by Special Observer.
4494 polling officers, 2350 Guards, 400 Home Guards and 100 Ex-servicemen were deployed on security duty.
