Coimbatore: Citing the High Court order to stop new recruitments of sanitary workers in Coimbatore Corporation and regularise the work of existing contractual workers by making them permanent, the members of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) protested in front of South Taluk Office here on Thursday.
The protest was led by General Secretary of CITU K Ratnakumar in which large numbers of contractual sanitary workers took part and raised slogans against Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) for not abiding the HC order.
Following the recent interview held in CCMC for the post of 500 Sanitary workers, CITU approached the High Court stating that while there are hundreds of contractual workers working with CCMC for several years, the new recruitments questions the job permanency of the existing contractual workers.
CITU also alleged of irregularities in the recruitment process. The noted that the protest held today was staged to garner the attention of CCMC and remind them of the HC order.
"By implementing the order, the livelihood of the contractual sanitary workers will significantly increase, as hike in salary will ensure them a more dignified life", they stated.
