Coimbatore: More than 50 people were served breakfast by Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam to break the superstition that pregnant women should not come outside or eat during the solar eclipse. Today, the annular solar eclipse was visible in the sky across India and in particular in Coimbatore.

Science enthusiasts have said that the eclipse should not be seen with mere eyes or any ordinary sunglasses. Many organizations from both government and private sector have introduced solar glasses to view this once in a lifetime celestial event. Scientists have requested everyone to witness this rare phenomenon with proper protection. Even after scientific explanation, there are many superstitions that surround the solar eclipse even in cities and towns of India.

These age old superstitions that pregnant women should not come out and others shouldn't eat until after the solar eclipse is over have been a major deterrent for people in India to witness this celestial spectacle.

Today more than 50 people ate breakfast at Periyar Padipakam in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore to break the myths surrounding these superstitions.

Speaking to reporters on this, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam General Secretary K. Ramakrishnan said that the eclipse was "astonishingly scientific" but that some religious fanatics have portrayed it as a sinister phenomenon. He said that many people are superstitious about this and that people are drowning in that superstition.

He said that there are widespread superstitions, such as the fact that pregnant women should not come out and children should not play or eat until the eclipse is over. He further added that while many would say that an atom is immovable if there is no God in spiritual terms, he questioned how is it acceptable to say that this eclipse is a danger to God. Thus to break the myths around this superstition we have arranged a public breakfast to show people that these superstitions are wrong.
